I know it's a bit late in the year to start yapping about New Year's resolutions - considering that we are already a quarter of the way through the year. Before we know it, it will be 2010. Then we'll spin into making more New Year's resolutions again, when we didn't fulfil the previous year's.For some of us, our New Year's resolutions make more combacks than Frank Sinatra did when he was alive - I am so guilty of this. So, this year, I didn't bother making any New Year's resolutions, I just resolved to try and be a better person; a resolution that makes its way onto every New Year's resolution I have made since time immemorial. Checking my mail this morning, I came across an interesting article which anyone can learn something for, no matter how 'on schedule' or not, they are with their resolutions. And anyway, who said you have to make New Year's resolutions in January. I'm making my New's Years resolutions now - no repeats from years past - and will start by following these words of wisdom sent to me by a friend. In our hard times of economic crunches, these gems of wisdom certainly won't make your life any worse than it is. Try it and see! Hard Work: All hard work bring a profit, but mere talk only leads to poverty. (This is a direct call to all those who talk about what they are going to do but never get to it, or sit around waiting for life to begin - i.e. God's intervention - when they should grab every opportunity, even if initially, the benefits don't look good. Laziness: A sleeping Lobster is carried away by the water current. (That says it all. Sit around doing nothing and you'll wake up one day and wonder where your life went.) Earning: Never depend on a single source of income. (This one will probably be a little hard to achieve, saying that, it does link into hard work.) Spending: If you buy things you don't need, you will sell things you need. (How many of us are guilty of buying things we don't need, just to prove something to the Jones'?) Saving: Don't save what is left after spending, spend what is left after saving. (Which means, I won't be spending anything. lol) Borrowing: The borrower becomes the lender's slave. (This is an old Akan proverb, that the majority still refuse to follow, relying on the proverbial hospitable Ghanaian trait to allow them to get away with bad borrowing habits. If you can't afford it, then it's not time for you to have it, is my motto.) Accounting: It's not use carrying an umbrella if your shoes are leaking. Auditing: Beware of little expenses; a small leak can sink a large ship. (Remember the Titanic? All it took was a little brush with an iceberg, and as they say, 'the rest is history.') Risk Taking: Never test the depth of a river with both feet. (Another Akan proverb, meaning, have an alternative plan! There is taking a calculated risk and ... there is stupidity.) Investment: Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Wishing us all a healthy, happy, prosperous and peaceful life for the last three quarters of 2009. As they say, 'Better late than never,' so, get cracking.
