Last week, I and some other German interns and volunteers working in Accra visited a local school in Bakasoa in order to organize games and sports activities for the children. Since most of my fellow volunteers are working in schools or nurseries daily, the visit at the “Child Aid Foundation School” was nothing new for them. For me, being a volunteer in a journalistic project, it was an exciting and new experience.

 When people here in Ghana or in my home country Germany ask what course I study and I answer “history", one can most often watch similar reactions: a quizzical look and some sceptic questions like “Aha, and what for?”. It seems to be a global phenomenon: Many people tend to underestimate the value of history as an academic discipline. And I can’t even blame them...

Day 19  I had a bad sleep. This night was way too hot.
I went to the office, continued my articles and finished the text “Ghana – a place to avoid?”. I quit at 4 pm, looking forward to the party at our house this night.

 Should that hassle really remind us of the darkest chapters of colonial times? Then, imported from the overseas colonies, they used to showcase wild natives with a dark complexion at court, later on at bourgeoisie party evenings, as a curiosity? At least, for a usually convinced European, this kind of uncomfortable idea suggests itself, when you notice the bitter African reactions to the public exposure of Caster Semeya’s sex test in western media.

 When I decided to go to Ghana I was confronted with two completely different opinions of my family, friends and others.
One the one hand there were the supporters. They said it will be a great experience, something I will never forget, nor regret. On the other hand there were the sceptics. They have prejudices. They asked “why Africa”? Africa is corrupt and dirty; poverty, famine and diseases are the reality. |
