Ghana to participate in West African Canoe Kayak Championship

Ghana will participate in the West African Canoe Kayak Championship scheduled for Cote d'Ivoire in October. The championship expected to draw participation from countries within the sub-region will mark Ghana's first ever appearance at such an important international competition.

Jonathan Tackie-Komme, Chairman of the Ghana Rowing and Canoe Association confirmed this to GNA Sports on Wednesday when the Association presented equipment worth 11,500 Pounds Sterling to the National Sports Council (NSC) in Accra. The equipment made up of 26 Canoes and 30 paddles were donated by the International Canoe Federation, (ICF) which is headquartered in Switzerland to promote and develop the sport in the country. As part of efforts towards putting together a formidable team for the event and future competitions, Tackie-Komme said the Association will soon organize series of championship to unearth budding talents in the sport.

Mr Tackie-Komme explained that the Association has visited Akosombo to organize people around the lakeside in preparation for such competitions while efforts are far advanced to get communities along the coastal belt including Ga Mashie, Tema, Nungua, Teshie, Osu, La, Ada and Elmina as well as others in readiness for the sport. "Efforts are also underway to get communities along the Volta River and notable water bodies including the Tono and Vea irrigation Dams in the Upper East Region and the Botanga Irrigation Dam in the Northern Region as partners to develop the sport."

Mr Tackie-Komme added that the Association intends to incorporate the sport into the nation's Festivals to unite and improve the health of the populace as well as the institution of a national championship. He therefore used the occasion to appeal to corporate bodies for support towards the promotion and development of the sport in the country.
