Since Ghana's independence on 6th March, 1957, the baton for the leadership role has been passed between the hands of civilian and military rule alike. After achieving independence, Dr Kwame Nkrumah became the Prime Minister until he was named President on 1st June, 1960. In the midst of all the military interferences, Ghana held its first general elections in 1969 which elected Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia as Prime Minister and Mr Edward Akuffo Addo as President.
