"We've got to get better at telling the success stories of Africa in addition to the horror stories." But how do you tell stories about Africa without making "blanket statements" about a continent with 900 million people, numerous faiths, tribes and nations, Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Karen Heller asks. Well, you start with "the magazine of serious fabulousness", she continues scathingly. "Vanity Fair, which views the environment through the green hemp-gauze of Hollywood, is just the publication to pounce on the philanthropy zeitgeist. A montage of stills and photos of Kwame Nkrumah, made by a friend of mine to celebrate 50 years of Ghana's independence. The narration is adapted from some eulogies at Kwame Nkrumah's funeral. Including the leader of the 1972 coup, Colonel I.K. Acheampong and Kwame Afreh. "March 6 1957, Ghana became an independent country. Now, is a welcome opportunity for us to pay our last tribute, to the memory of Dr. Nkrumah. Who, did so much for the political emancipation and unity not only of Ghana, but Africa, as a whole. In his lifetime, he waged a relentless war against colonialism and racism. Even after his death, his spirit will, no doubt, continue to inspire the valiant fighters against these two enemies of Africa. To Dr. Nkrumah, the anti-colonial struggle was but a prelude to the unity of Africa and the eventful creation of a continental Union government. But, like most pioneers, Nkrumah appeared to be ahead of his time. For some felt his concepts to be unrealistic and premature. A pan-Africanist of no mean order, he raised the statue of the African to a high-pedestal in the international community. He gave the African a personality to be proud of, and invested in an image of dignity and respect. But like all of us, Nkrumah had his shortcomings. Perhaps the problems of Africa and the world loomed so large in his horizon, that he overlooked certain serious difficulties and irregularities at home. The legacy of Nkrumah has taught that there can be no one solution to independence. But let us give him credit, that he approached his task with an infectious enthusiasm, courage and vision. Kwame Nkrumah inspired a whole generation of black people, not only in Ghana and Africa, but everywhere. He and a few leaders in his generation finally destroyed in the minds of millions of black men, the myth of white superiority and black inferiority. Kwame Nkrumah taught us to believe that what others have done, we can also do." Song: Moby - Guitar Flute and String [More] [Less] |
